MaGiCAD

Initial Test of Randomisation

Sample collection for MaGiCAD started in November, 2001. Since then, over 150 people have been recruited into the study.

Inital analysis of MaGiCAD has focused on the random selection of patients into the trial. As one of the aims of MaGiCAD is to be broadly representative, it is important to ensure that those patients recruited into MaGiCAD are representative of the entire population of patients who are admitted to Papworth Hospital for an angiography.

The analysis of this data has been completed. The analysis compared 910 consecutive individuals who were admitted to Papworth for an angiography between 28 November, 2001 and 1 February, 2002 with all of those patients who were approached for entry into MaGiCAD between 28 November, 2001 and 22 March, 2002 (119 patients).

The results can be summarised as follows:

1. Of the 119 patients approached during this period, 100 (84%) agreed to take part in the study.

2. There was only one difference between the entire Papworth angiography population and those patients approached for entry into MaGiCAD. This was in the ward to which the patient was admitted:

All patients admitted to Papworth for an angiography Patients approached for entry into MaGiCAD
Ward Number Percentage Number Percentage
Cardiac Unit (CU) 232 26% 20 17%
Day Ward (DW) 547 60% 85 71%
Varrier Jones (VJ) 118 13% 14 12%
Other wards 13 1% 0 0%
Total 910 100% 119 100%

3. There were no differences in any of the other parameters measured so far between the MaGiCAD group and all of the patients admitted to Papworth for an angiography. This is very good news for MaGiCAD! It means that our effort to be broadly representative has largely been successful!
